《钱锺书手稿集》中《容安馆札记》和《中文笔记》的错简，前已指正（《中华读书报》2004年2月11日、《上海书评》2012年4月22日又11月18日），《外文笔记》安容独外？
假使把“按时排序”的编辑体例当真，那末全集的序列从头到尾没有对的——本和本之间的衔接只偶尔不错。例如钱先生1971年在明港劳改营节抄的Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei, Erinnerungen von Lenin（编为No.126、No.125；同时另两册笔记编入No.53和No.99），编者Monika归划入“1972-1998”——这“断代”就破常人的常识，还顺藤摸瓜，归因于“中德两国的深厚友谊”。笑死我了——中书君小时候还骂“德国人是做香肠的民族，错认幽默”呢。先不管他。这儿说的错简专指叶和叶之间的零乱舛谬。
第2册第185-186页为第3-4页的复见，应芟夷。
第2册第241页应移植于第213页后（Le Voyage de Monsieur Perrichon）。
第2册第249页与第248页当互乙（California: A Study of American Character；my deepest motives and problems have centered about the Idea of the Community）。
第3册第270页应移植于第271页后（Les demi-vierges）。
第4册第432页应移植于第434页后（Reflections on Our Age；it is only some among the many possible developments of human history that are considered to be progressive），空白页应剔除。431页前有脱叶，下面为Revue d'Histoire Littéraire de la France1958年第1期的补抄，编者误属作Pull Devil Pull Baker。
第6册第569-574页应移植于第718页后（A Modern English Grammar）。钱先生摘录A Modern English Grammar时已自编页码。
第6册第638-639页应移植于第568页后（A Modern English Grammar）。
第6册第646页应移植于第647页后（A Modern English Grammar；there is no answer）。
第18册第503-505页、第515-516页、第519-522页三处同为Frank Swinnerton的The Georgian Scene: A Literary Panorama札记的逸存，没头有尾。第519-522页最前，为原书的第193-361页，第515-516页为原书的第374-414页，第503-505页为原书的第414页至末（钱先生赞曰：“Sane and salutary and outspoken criticism, interspersed with personal reminiscences, be produced from 'London Bookman'.”）。第519-522页移植于第515-516页前，复一并移植于第503页前，庶几理顺章成。又按此本（No.106）为编者蛮强合成，手踪迥异，望而知非一时之作。第503-526页、第607-670页作于1946年——《小说识小》之“斐尔亭（Fielding）小说《汤姆·琼斯传》（History of Tom Jones）”云云即出其中，第527-606页为1953年的笔记。
第19册第87页为第182页的赘出，宜替换以第89页。
第21册第614页应移植于第849页后（English Opinions of French Poetry）。
第21册第642页应移植于第640页后（The Poetics）。
第21册第670页应移植于第668页后（A Grammar of Assent）。
第21册第671页应移植于第669页后（Pleasures and Speculations）。
第21册第676-677页应移植于第6册第712页后（A Modern English Grammar；the ideas present themselves to the mind of the speaker）。
第21册第680-681页应移植于第6册第700页后（A Modern English Grammar；a generaling pl. without any article）。
第21册第682-683页应移植于第6册第704页后（A Modern English Grammar；of all melancholy topics, what is the most melancholy）。又按叶眉的“The Perfumed Garden of Cheikh Nefzaoui”（原讹作Nefzaoni）的标题不用说是瞎编的。目录错漏，何啻千数。
第21册第686-687页应移植于第6册第695页前（A Modern English Grammar；I have other fish to fry）。上文Greek Art and Literature（第684-686页）亦宜一并移植。
第21册第690-691页应移植于第6册第554页后（A Modern English Grammar; after verbs like produce, create, beget, construct, manufacture, etc.）。又按钱先生1952年选录A Modern English Grammar，笔墨纸全一样，却给编者二分四散，一划入“1938-1949”末的No.39，一属于“1949-1972”末的No.121，远隔得彼此要害相思病——疑两者本为一体。我浮山越海使之团聚，有良心的人都得感谢。钱先生在抄A Modern English Grammar的间歇，穿插几种札记和Jottings，并打上框框，如第6册第715页的The Star of Satan，编者全看不见。
第21册第751页应移植于第755页后（Essays and Addresses）。
第21册第769页应移植于第778页后（Specimens of Douglas Jerrold's Wit）。
第21册第777页应移植于第768页前（The Jest Book）。
第21册第811-812页应移植于第808页后（A Modern Book of Esthetics；dominant character or idée mère (Taine, Philosophie de l'art)）。
第21册第837-843页阑入1978年版Lazarillo de Tormes的摘记（就是杨绛翻译的《小癞子》，而编者竟认作作者名）。
第21册第847页应移植于第612页后（Socratic Method and Critical Philosophy。写入《容安馆日札》第七十四、二百三十三、四百八十九则）。除此横梗板障，则第846页与第848页通家好合矣（English Opinions of French Poetry；on three Unities in Preface and Prologue to Secret Love）。
第7册第662页及第674-675页底版污损。
寻行数墨，亦既劳止！《外文笔记》第32册以下尚未入手，下回再说。
