Reuben A. Brower编的On Translation，钱先生1965年用打字机札记了四叶，选摘了一个笑谭：“George du Maurier, The Martian tells us that Rapaud of the Institut F. Brossard rendered timeo Danaos, et dona ferentes as ‘J'estime les Danois et leurs dents de fer’(111).”眉批：
From Achilles Fang’s article“Some Reflections on the Difficulty of Translations” with its pretentious polyglot learning and ponderous vivacity, “a practicing poet à la chinois”(p.112)!
Achilles Fang（方志彤）作态炫博，自矜通解多种语文，扭捏出文艺姿态，“笨重得可以压坍楼板”；洋洋二十三页中，可取者仅此引语一句耳。
遍检钱先生述作，不复见Achilles Fang名，惟馀灯边之影。《管锥编》论《文赋》：“迩来《文赋》，译为西语，彼土论师，亦颇徵引（e. g. R. P. Blackmur, The Lion and the Honeycomb, 237: to give Dante a little backing）。然迻译者蒙昧无知，遂使引用者附会无稽，一则盲人瞎马，一则阳炎空花，于此篇既无足借重，复勿堪借明也。”陈世骧、Achilles Fang、周汝昌都译过《文赋》，而检钱先生注中所引（“as to the interaction of stimulus and response, the intermingling of the flow with the blocking of the flow”），骂的是1951年出版的Ernest Richard Hughes（1883-1956）的The Art of Letters：Lu Chi’s Wen Fu。Hughes，华名休士、修中诚，管理中英庚款董事会第二任董事，牛津大学Lincolns College中国宗教与哲学高级讲师，钱先生牛津大学学位论文的审稿人，钱先生谋牛津大学教职的遴选人。老吏断狱，当不徇情枉法。Achilles Fang当时在Harvard Journal of Asian Studies, Vol. 14, No. 3-4, Dec., 1951, pp.615-636作有长书评，他自己的译注Rhymeprose on Literature, The Wen-Fu of Lu Chi也刊于同期的第527-566页。钱先生应该知道《文赋》Fang译本，因为“Some Reflections on the Difficulty of Translations”里就讲过。他这几句话也许是泛指概论。Achilles Fang读《管锥编》至此，想来脸红胆战。
却说十多年后的一个夜里，1979年4月29日，钱先生在波士顿Howard Johnson’s旅店忽然省得记起方才一道吃饭的可不就是“Some Reflections on the Difficulty of Translations”的作者（My Dear Achilles, The moment you left, a bell suddenly rang in my memory. So you are the man who made a highly original contribution to the volume On Translation, ed. by Brower!）。为补救那时候的健忘，他特意作书尽义务地恭维（Please accept this belated tribute）它的“创辟”（a highly original）。立言各有所为，公廷私室，誉毁异宜，盖亦平常情事。“在研究古代——是否竟可以说‘古今’或‘历代’——文评时，正像在社会生活里，我们得学会孟子所谓‘知言’，把古人的一时兴到语和他的成熟考虑过的意见区别开来，尤其把他的由衷认真的品评和他的官样套语、应酬八股区别开来。”也许我们读钱先生书时还不妨记住。假如高峰枫教授得睹On Translation笔记，准会改写他的《钱锺书致方志彤英文信两通》。
一周后，钱先生在洛杉矶写信向Fang卖好，报告在芝加哥所作《围城》译本引言的删改——变讥诮冯友兰为吹嘘Achilles Fang（“When a student at Tsing Hua, he was an arrogant young man, publicly scorning such eminent professors as Feng Yu-lan”, etc. This, as you well know, is arrant and harmful nonsense. I set the record straight as follows: “…an arrogant young man who cut lectures and kept very much to himself. Among his few intimate friends was Achilles Fang, the ‘word wizard’, as Marianne Moore called him, who was then a student in the department of philosophy”），“聊志吾二人交情云尔”（I wish to give a public testimonial to our friendship）。
《谈交友》称“我有大学时代五位最敬爱的老师以及其他三四位好朋友”——张申府，温源宁，叶公超，冯友兰，吴宓，常凤瑑，许振德，饶馀威，张杰，能添个方淳模么？没有查到两人“谊如骨肉”（intimate friends）的文献——也许那是钱先生习惯的夸张。方“当时还未露头角呢”。常风《和钱锺书同学的日子》：“哲学系给高年级学生开讨论会，教师和学生都参加。每次开会，冯友兰院长都派他的秘书李先生来请锺书参加。锺书每次回来后都十分得意，因为他总是舌战九儒，每战必胜。他告我开会时的情况，什么人发言，他跟什么人辩论。”方淳模当是钱先生舌底败将——参看齐家莹《清华人文学科年谱》第126页：“1933年2月13日，哲学系公布本学期系会日期及每次报告题目。2月21日冯友兰：关于理之讨论；3月7日方淳模：题目待定；3月21日乔冠华：黑格尔自然辩证法研究；4月4日饶可将：先天观念或观念与习惯；4月18日王宪钧：The Meaning of Negation Nature of Infinite Numbers；5月2日吴恩裕：题目待定；5月16日周辅成：道家在中国哲学中之地位或庄子书研究；5月30日王光祥：休谟道德学说。”钱先生把清华日记全毁了，“好让想象力自由游戏”。
